Douglas Bowman presents a wonderful article, Sliding Doors of CSS at A List Apart that pulls together a number of the techniques I've see recently for handling lists as tabs via CSS.
The standout difference of his technique is the use of two different background images for nested elements in order to support flexibility in the size of the composed element.
